Board of Education Discusses District Goals

BOARD OF EDUCATION DISCUSSES DISTRICT GOALS

The Board of Education intends to facilitate focused discussion at the end of each regular monthly meeting related to a list of identified goals presented by the district administrative team.  During my tenure at Orion, our administrative team has analyzed the district operations and data from many sources.  With the collective input from administration and our Board of Education, we have identified several goals that we believe are worthy of more collaboration and feedback from all stakeholders.  Below is a list of those ideas:

  • Curriculum Alignment with Common Core Standards
  • Raise the Expectations from “Meets” to “Exceeds” and higher ACT scores
  • Maximize Professional Development time and create systems to support our teachers’ growth
  • Plan and budget for building renovations (HVAC) that will would make possible the option of providing more summer school opportunities and/or consideration of a balanced calendar

This list represents a starting point as we attempt to define the priorities that will impact our school improvement efforts over the next three to five years.  Recently, we have begun the process of engaging our instructional staff in developing strategies and action plans to accomplish these objectives.  Since this list is not a final slate of goals, I would anticipate additional topics of interest will surface from the schools as our faculty integrates these objectives in their respective “School Improvement Plans”.

The purpose of this communication is to promote input from our parents and community members so that we may create the most comprehensive “functional roadmap” towards the overarching theme of providing a “GREAT” education for our students.  We will make available several formats for people to express ideas and opinions including:

  1. At the end of each Board of Education meeting, if time allows, we will open the meeting up for some discussion and participation from people who are present.  We plan for this forum to start immediately after the regular meeting agenda and run until 9:00pm each month.

  2. The link at the end of this article allows for comments to be submitted and posted on our website.

  3. All the Board of Education members have an email address listed on the website if one prefers to send information directly to the Board of Education members.

  4. Emails, phone calls, or personal visits at the district office are always welcome.  I would recommend calling ahead for an appointment as my monthly meeting schedule necessitates me being out of the office frequently.

The topic for December’s meeting (Weds, 12/15/2010 @ 7:30) will be:  Raise the Expectations from “Meets” to “Exceeds” and higher ACT scores.  We do an excellent job with our “Meets” percentages on State tests, but we believe more students can and should attain higher levels of achievements on the ISAT, PSAE, and ACT assessments.

I encourage you to participate in our planning process so that together, we can accomplish significant improvements in preparing our students for success in their post-secondary education challenges.
