Carson Turnquiest - October Student of the Month

Congratulations to Carson Turnquist who has been named the OHS October Student of the Month. Carson was selected by the faculty and staff of Orion High School due to his academic excellence, leadership, integrity, and responsibility within the classroom. Take some time and get to know this outstanding student.

Parents:  Jackie Jiang and Dean Turnquist.

What is your favorite subject in school? My favorite subject is Math because I enjoys its objective nature and the reduced room for interpretation. The process of solving a math problem is a straightforward, systematic process to a solution

What activities are you involved with both inside and outside of school? At OHS I'm involved in the band and outside of school I enjoy reading or playing video games.

What are your goals after high school – college, career, military, etc.? After high school, I plan to attend college and have been visiting colleges in Illinois to find which best suits my career goal of becoming an aerospace engineer.

What is your favorite high school memory so far?

Seeing the Orion High School staff race in inflatable costumes.

What pro-tip would you give students on how to survive high school?

Each week, I suggest to identify and organize the assignments you know you'll have throughout the week. This way, you can create a schedule that prevents overworking yourself on a specific day.

What motivates you to work hard and stay involved at school?

Good grades and a good education will help me become more likely in securing the college and jobs I desire in the future.

If you had to give a TED Talk tomorrow, what would it be about?

It's a smart idea to set 15 alarms on your phone each morning that are each 1 minute apart.

What did Carson's teachers say about him:

Carson is usually the first person to class in the morning and puts down the chairs for his classmates. He always completes his homework in a timely manner and he willingly accepts feedback with consideration and grace.  Although he is quiet, he has the best sense of low-key comedic timing. Carson is just an all around good person.

Another teacher wrote: Carson is sneaky in the best ways. He's quiet and will rarely offer things in class publicly, but then he writes wonderfully thoughtful responses and always gives his full effort on them, applying the concepts from lessons that show that he is truly trying to understand them. He is so, so funny, and he applies that humor and creativity in ways that shows enthusiasm for making his teachers laugh. Around Christmas, he's been known to sneakily leave gifts for his teachers with no name attached--not for the recognition, but to be truly thoughtful. He is exactly the type of student this award is meant to highlight--not the most obvious choice, but one who may fly under the radar in style.
